About Our Sri Lankan Sandalwood Essential Oil
Sandalwood is one of the oldest known perfume materials, having at least 4000 years of history and uninterrupted use. It is believed that sandalwood oil was known in Ceylon (today's Sri Lanka) over 1000 years ago, but it is only in the last 200 years that the oil has appeared in European and American perfumery.
Sandalwood must be over 30 years old before it is ready for distillation. Preparing the wood is a cumbersome, drawn-out process, and distillation also requires many hours per batch and large amounts of steam. Cultivation of the tree has remained a tradition in India and Sri Lanka for thousands of years.
The oil is steam distilled from the powdered wood of branches and roots of Santalum album. The tree finds its home in India, Ceylon, Indonesia and surrounding islands. In the recent past, export of Sandalwood oil has been inhibited by some countries of origin to protect their natural resources. So for a number of years we have not been able to purchase our beloved original Sandalwood from Sri Lanka. Only recently have there been changes in the legalities governing the export of the oil, and for now we were able to purchase a small quantity from our established producer in Sri Lanka.
Aromatic Notes
Smooth, woody, sweet, balsamic. Slightly woodier then our Australian variety.
