About Our Organic Rosewood Essential Oil

Sustainably harvested Rosewood essential oils has been a long sought after gem in Aromatherapy. It has incomparable therapeutic qualities and a uniquely gentle, almost divine fragrance. For many decades we have not offered Aniba rosaedora, because we could not find a trustworthy source for this endangered species.

For many years we chose not to offer Rosewood oil, as we could not identify a supply that met our standards for ecological responsibility and traceability. A few years ago we finally encountered a source we trust, and it quickly sold out. We are delighted to be able to offer a small quantity again, while supplies last.

Therapeutic Properties

In the 1980s and 1990s Rosewood essential was considered the number one oil for pulmonary, ear, nose, and throat infections. It is is highly recommended by Dr. Daniel Penoel and Pierre Franchomme for infections in babies, children, frail, and immunocompromised persons.

Due to its exceptional character of combining absolute gentleness with powerful antiviral potency, it is equally appropriate for conditions that require a pain-free approach of healing, such as genital infections, and many more. Other indications would be cystitis, vaginitis, bacterial, viral, and fungal infections, as well as asthenia and depression, burnout, exhaustion, and stimulating intestinal peristalsis.

The Site: Brazil

According to the great Steffen Arctander (Perfume and Flavor Materials of Natural Origins), Rosewood oil, also known as Bois de Rose oil - was among the 15 most abundantly produced essential oils in the post WW2 period. Accordingly, the annual production in Brazil alone was 500 - 600 metric tons per year. This was also reflected in its low price on the world market. The intense harvesting of the trees led to a situation where the trees became increasingly scarce and retreated to the remote corners of the Amazonia jungle.

In the early 2000s, programs aimed at protecting Amazonian ecosystems led several enterprising communities in the Brazilian Amazon to begin replanting Rosewood trees and distilling the oil from the leaves rather than from the wood of felled trees.

The oil we have the privilege to offer is from such cultivations, and is unique, because it is sustainably produced from the wood, in compliance with CITES regulations. So it represents the best of both worlds, offering the prized wood oil in a sustainable way.
