This essential oil has been praised throughout history. The first century Greek physician, Dioscorides, wrote that Lemon Balm improves gout, promotes menstruation, and remedies toothaches if mixed with wine. He also stated that it can treat scorpion stings and dog bites.

Another early, well known description comes from the visionary writings of Hildegard von Bingen (1098 - 1179), who states that Melissa warms the heart and that people who use it laugh a lot.

Paracelsus (1493-1541) believed that Lemon Balm was an “elixir of life” and would increase strength and longevity.

Studying contemporary herbal stories, it is quite obvious that ritual and spiritual uses are commonly attributed to Melissa, especially by those in pursuit of romance and primarily as a charm that was worn to bring a lover into one’s life.

To this day, Melissa is a common remedy that many herbalists keep in their apothecary for the treatment of nervous disorders and general relaxation.

Generally it is said that Melissa is known to balance feelings and emotions, which draws a straight path to modern understanding of the equilibrating powers of the components found in Melissa 3). And sure enough, Melissa is now understood to combine an excellent antiviral component with a soothing and pervasive sedative power which is difficult to imagine, it has to be experienced.

A fair amount of research was stimulated by the desire to scientifically prove the effects of the traditional monastic recipe of Klosterfrau Melissengeist 1). This herbal distillate is still in high demand and manufactured in large quantities in Central Europe. This research proved hugely successful demonstrating the superior balancing effects of the components of Melissa and other essential oils on the Autonomic Nervous System (ANS) and thusly proving the efficacy of Melissa and 12 other herbs. The double blind studies demonstrated the ability of Klosterfrau Melissengeist to remedy the common cold, insomnia, restlessness, nervousness, stomach and intestinal complaints, and muscular spasms or cramps, among many others.

Following the historic examples and integrating the modern day research of Prof. H. Wagner and Dr. R. Deininger 2),  Original Swiss Aromatics has created Modern Magic blends, which utilize the ANS equilibrating properties of Citral and other components of Melissa, which make Klosterfrau Melissengeist so beneficial.
